Hope you are out in your garden today. Weather and soil conditions couldn’t be finer for getting in your veggies, annual or perennial flowers, shrubs or trees!

It rained almost everywhere on the Coast early Saturday morning. It’s always best to let the soil dry out a little before you go tilling or walking in your garden. Wet soils will compact down making it difficult for growing roots to penetrate, as well as future waterings or fertilizer to reach roots deep down. If you have clay based soils, tilling or planting in your garden when it is wet will only produce soil balls that are hard to break up once they dry.

So when it rains….stay out of the garden for a little while. Let Mother Nature do her nurturing and you can follow in her footsteps just a day or so later. If you live in a very sandy soil area, the above may not apply. Hopefully though, you have amended your planting beds and vegetable gardens with compost, soil conditions and the like so they are no longer sandy.

Hey, if you haven’t been to one of our wine tasting events…you need to stop by this Saturday, April 21st between 2PM – 4PM. Wine Tastings at Carolina Home & Garden truly are an event. We couple sipping wine from local wine shops with displays from other businesses who are delighted to have you sample their food. In addition we always try to offer something for the artsy side in all of us.

This Saturday Alex & Brett’s will be sampling some fabulous pics of wine along with tasty treats from their offerings at their gourmet grocery & bakery in Morehead City. David Cain, Cainos BBQ will have his smoker set up on the perimeter of our patio/fountain area. He will be serving up some samples of his slow smoked, hand rubbed baby back ribs, chicken and pulled Boston Butt BBQ right off the grill (smoker). You can even purchase a bottle of wine and rack of ribs to take home for dinner if you like.

Tony Reese, a local Cape Carteret resident, will cater to the creative arts with his paintings of some awesome landscapes….completed in just a few hours. For those of us old enough to remember TV artist, Bob Ross…. Tony follows his footsteps and will be painting a landscape during the two hour Wine Tasting Event.

All of these happenings will be to the easy listening, live music of Van and Jennifer Manuel. Seasoned vocalists and musicians, just having relocated to Beaufort, they are making their debut here on the Crystal Coast at the event.

So grab your friends and family and come on over to Carolina Home and Garden Saturday to sip wine, stroll through our beautiful, in full bloom gardens and relax by the koi pond and fountain with some great food and music.

See you there!

This week is Earth Week. Do your part to help the planet by taking part in the Earth Week Challenge. Just achieving one simple goal per day can reduce everyone’s impact on the environment.

Monday: Meatless Monday. Reduce your carbon footprint by cutting down or eliminating your meat consumption for a day.

Tuesday: Power Down. Fix your computer settings, unplug energy sapping devices, install smart strips to eliminate vampire power.

Wednesday: Reusable Bottles & Mugs. Eliminate the use of all paper coffee cups and plastic water bottles.

Thursday: Cut Paper Waste. Reduce your use of paper, adjust your printer settings, cancel junk mail subscriptions.

Friday: (Reusable) Bag Lunch. Bring your own lunch in reusable containers or bring the containers to your favorite take-out restaurant and pass on the plastic utensils, excess paper napkins and bags.

Saturday: Second-Hand Clothes And Products. Instead of purchasing new items, reuse and upcycle old items.

Sunday: Waste Less Water. Take shorter showers, turn the faucet off while brushing teeth, do only full loads of dishes and laundry, install water saver shower heads.

Don’t let the few showers we had over the weekend fool you. Windy weather combined with sun and unseasonably warm temperatures makes your plants very thirsty, especially if they are flowering. If you have containerized plants the wind takes even a greater toll. Plants in containers, like hanging baskets have a very limited supply of moisture. So don’t forget to water, water, water when the forecast is for a sunny, windy day.

What can you do to minimize watering, especially in a drought….sign up for our Zeriscaping Workshop on April 21st. Ken Howell, a certified landscape consultant at Carolina Home and Garden will present options for low water requiring trees, shrubs and perennials . Other techniques of of water conservation will be included in his presentation.
